Re: M91 Carcano Cavalry Carbine. NY legal?

What is the best way to get the trigger group out of the Carcano? I got an itch late last night to try and disassemble it to fully clean it. Front barrel screw came out which I know can be a doozie, and the trigger group screws came out BUT I could not get the group out of the rifle to pull the stoc...

Re: 8mm mauser, any brand or load to stay away from in M38 Turkish?

So it's basically as I thought it was, mechanically and functionally a Gew 98?

I was looking at the Federal ammunition, so I should be good as long as it head spaces

Re: 8mm mauser, any brand or load to stay away from in M38 Turkish?

What would a GEW88 conversion be? This rifle is stamped 1944 and as far as I know, it's an M38 although the gun shop listed it as a 1903

Re: 8mm mauser, any brand or load to stay away from in M38 Turkish?

Thanks. Headspace had crossed my mind but I didn't know really since this is my first Mauser. I don't really expect to shoot it much, but I would like one that can. I suspect that they probably did check it, but I'll buy the gauge myself.. I have a couple thousand rounds of 7.62x54R commercial and s...

8mm mauser, any brand or load to stay away from in M38 Turkish?

I know that 8mm Mauser is usually pretty available except right now. There is some greek surplus floating around that I think is too cheap to trust, but otherwise small sellers and secondary market otherwise. I have found some Federal 170 grain that is about as cheap as I think I'll find at $40 per ...

Re: M91 Carcano Cavalry Carbine. NY legal?

I took home a 1944 Turkish 8mm Mauser along with the Carcano. He had a Swedish Mauser for a lot more money, and a 1943 Springfield M1 Garand that was making me think a little, but at $1,995 for the condition it was in ( field grade I think ) I think there are better deals. He does layaway so who kno...

Re: M91 Carcano Cavalry Carbine. NY legal?

A lot of complaints now on the Carcanos. I think they've gone through the good ones and are down to garbage ones. I've read about frozen bolts, broken bolts, one where the bolt was stuck in the chamber, cracked stocks, chunks missing from stocks, sewer pipe barrels. It's at the point that unless it...

Re: M91 Carcano Cavalry Carbine. NY legal?

Not really happy with Classic Firearms.. IF they did a hand select ( which I paid for ), the rifle that was sent was in rough condition, not good condition. They are probably dealing with a crate of garbage.. I wasn't able to check condition of the bore or function, as the FFL I dealt with. since th...

Re: boxed 7.62x54R in .50 cal ammo can?

I'd have to open the box and count, as I now put all the Wolf and surplus into one .50 cal can, but either one fits 2 levels of the packages standing straight up, perfectly. I forget how many is in the level, but 12 per level sounds right and 24 boxes would be 480 so that seems right

Re: re finish a rusty junker Remington 597

Well, it was new in March, but still has under 10k miles on it. I did pay extra for the dealerships undercoating ( which seems to be black chassis saver paint ), it came with a 7 year environmental warranty which included interior wear which is the only reason I went for it.. Being shiny paint is wh...

Re: re finish a rusty junker Remington 597

This is way off topic, but anyone know if the Mini Mosin .22LR ( KSA9130 ) is as small as a Cricket "My First Rifle"? I bought a Cricket for giggles years ago because it was cheap, like $50 at walmart on clearence. It's an easy gun to grab and take care of small critters and such, It's way...

Re: re finish a rusty junker Remington 597

I'll have to order some... Actually I might order a lot. They list it as a chassis saver for cars and trucks as well. I think it might hold up to NY road salt.

Re: re finish a rusty junker Remington 597

Well, it went from rusty junker to shiny new looking in about 1/2 hour... I couldn't find any of my copper brushes, but instead got some pure copper scouring pads from the grocery store figuring they would work... Indeed, I wouldn't try it on a milsurp or high dollar gun, but the rust is completely ...

Re: re finish a rusty junker Remington 597

Yeah, to be honest. I was never happy with the rifle. I even tried selling it off years ago, nobody wanted it, and the local shops I went to all called it a pile of trash basically ( at the time, nearly new ). It does work and operate fine, and with the $20 3x9 scope on it, It's accurate enough but ...

re finish a rusty junker Remington 597

I have this Remington 597 that I didn't do anything with for a couple years, sitting in a gun case. It did what all modern Remington's do and rusted. I cleaned it as best as I can but it's still obviously rusty. It functions correctly however. I have not tried something like CLP and a scouring pad o...

Well, I ordered one, and paid the $30 for best of 10. I will probably figure out how to get some ammo for it. But likely only to have.

Re: boxed 7.62x54R in .50 cal ammo can?

Ok so JYD was spot on.. Wolf Military Classic for sure, is packaged exactly like the Russian surplus stuff, and exactly like Uncle Sam packaged M2 ball.. There is a stapled paper package inside the box. This will pack in either a .30 cal or a .50 cal can
