Re: 1895 FN Mauser mystery

Willyj73, that is an amazing 1893 long rifle. I've been collecting south american contract mausers for over 20 years and while I have some rarer pieces, I've never seen one as nice yours. Congrats. It was a very nice rifle. Pristine. I think the stock was lightly sanded at some point (stamps had th...

Re: 1897 full matching Dragoon and a mystery device

Google Russian to English translator using provided Google keyboard:

captain s.k. rnkovskiy yidna

Looks like an aiming training device. If it's Russian military, it probably should have the factory marking on it somewhere.

Re: Advice on Finnish sling hangers

My preference would be Finnish made dog collars if the stock had the regular Russian style slot cut outs. I'd use metal if the rifle already came with the metal sling hangers/swivels or if the rifle had the Finnish made escutcheons (those will only fit the metal hangers).

Looks good to me. I think it was sharpened after import.

Re: 1978 late date no maker M39

That looks like a real 1978 dated rifle. As far as I knew, they only went up to 1973. If Facebook didn't suck so bad, I'd like to have seen that on there.

I'm going to agree with this. Russians are cheap. They seem to choose function and they don't care about comfort. I'd guess it was cheaper to replace a broken leather dog collar than a broken sling swivel.

Re: Requsting Help Identifying two rifles and one bolt

Tula did not make any M91 rifles after 1926 and Izhevsk did not make any M91 rifles after 1919 (as far as anybody knows). So, both of your rifles started out as dragoons. And, they were converted to 91/30 specs. Your Tula looks to have a Tula receiver. The wreath marking was used on Tula and Izhevsk...

Re: If you ever wondered why people put up with Florida heat

I like heat. I've only been to FL in September on vacation. I don't know if I'd tire of sunshine and blue skies. I'd rather be on the ocean. It might not be as appealing to me if I were living inland...IDK. For what it's worth, I lived the first two years of my life on the beach. From what my mother...

Re: new rifle

For future reference....since the finish was already harmed by bubba...the Finns did use BLO for some of their finished rifles (according to this old post by Mangrove...post #69 https://www.gunboards.com/threads/so-what-to-use-on-finn-m39-brand-new-stock.429225/page-4). So, if you felt the stock abs...

Re: Transitional 91/30

Some photos of the markings. I think the marking on the barrel is the steel lot number. You can see that some of the parts are Tula. I cannot recall if the trigger spring/sear is Tula or Izhevsk.

Re: Transitional 91/30

Some photos of the rear sight and rifle markings. You can see some pitting that was blued over. So, the rifle was refurbed; else, the pitting would be through the bluing. But, I cannot find refurb markings. Bolt knob looks to have an "H" on it. If so, the "H" indicates this was a...

Transitional 91/30

Transitional 91/30 I purchased a few years ago from auction. The rifle is in excellent condition. Bluing looks brand new, which is typical on refurb rifles; however, I cannot find any refurb/depot marks on the rifle (none that I can recall). Rifle has original matching bolt and magazine. Stock is Tu...

I'll post a transitional rifle that I own. I thought I posted it here. I could not find an old post; so, I must not have. I'll post it in the regular Mosin section.

Re: Mosin I.D./Valuation

The Dragoon rifle didn't just vanish overnight in 1930 when the new specifications were approved. The changeover to 91/30 was gradual as old style parts still in inventory were used up. I was told that this change would continue into 1934 sometime before all the rifles being produced were using the...

Re: Dragoons

Some very nice Dragoon rifles there! I really like the one without the early non-crossbolt stock and handguard. Took me a long time to find one with an early type 2 handguard. Thanks. That was one of my earliest Mosin acquisitions. I think it was missing the rear band. I know it had wire wrapped ar...

Re: 1895 FN Mauser mystery

I'm not Mauser expert. First time I've seen an FN carbine (or short rifle) like that. I used to own a pristine FN 1893 Mauser. I believe some of the rifles were sold to Uruguay. I never disassembled the rifle because I did not want to risk boogering the screws up. Below is a few photos of the rifle ...

Re: Help needed

That is was a full length m91 infantry rifle, not a dragoon, that was shortened to 91/30 length and had the rear sight welded on. There should be a seam and spot welds at the muzzle end where they made a sleeve with the original front sight base on it and slid it over the shorter barrel. Not a bubb...
