Re: collision
There is even one musket that was struck by lightening as the soldier carrying it walked his post, it fused the metal and twisted the barrel like a pretzel. I believe it also killed the man. If that's the one I recall, the astoundingly lucky soldier survived, largely unharmed though knocked unconsc...

Re: Classic Firearms Ammo Sale
:soapbox2: OK, somebody has to say it.... You CANNOT neutralize the corrosive salts, they're as reacted (chemically) as they are going to get. You can only remove them physically, and the easiest and most effective way is by dissolving them in a polar solvent (water is probably the best and cheapest...

Re: 125 years if the Mosin Nagant?
It depends what event you use for the anniversary, but I think the anniversary has passed. I read (too late to try to find where tonight) that Emperor Alexander III approved the 1st sample of the "3-line" caliber rifle on April 28 1891 (dunno which calendar).

Re: Strange trigger/bolt engagement on an Iz 1946m44
Some folks store Mosins with the bolt open but the cocking piece turned as for setting the safety, to relax the striker spring. This may have a secondary benefit of confusing/frustrating the average thief who doesn't know to pull-and-turn before the bolt can be closed.

Re: Czech ammo question
Thank you. The mention of Czech-made steel-core heavy ball was years ago in some forum thread that I can no longer locate. So, to be formal, only Hungary ever made steel-core heavy ball?7x57 wrote:Czechs made only LB steel-core ammo, HB they made only with lead core.

Re: Split case
For those who have not seen any of these PRC 1000rd crates, this is new-production machine gun ammunition apparently made for export. It is more-or-less standard Type 53 steel-core (LPS) with bimetallic jackets and cases, but packed in 125rd paper-wrapped bundles, four bundles to the spam can, two c...

Re: Czech ammo question
The "Tz" is the designation for heavy ball, http://7.62x54r.net/MosinID/MosinAmmo012.htm , with a lead core and a bimetallic (plated steel) jacket. I've read that they later made a steel-core version but I haven't seen any details on it. I believe that light ball designation is "59&qu...

Re: Bolt Opened or Bolt Left Closed?
One option no-one has mentioned yet is bolt open with the striker let down (i.e. pull the cocking piece back and rotate it counterclockwise ~1/4 turn, like when you disassemble the bolt), so there is minimum striker spring compression. Because the bolt is held in alignment by the receiver, it doesn'...

Re: Adjusting M39 front sight
I have a vague recollection that each "dot" of windage adjustment screw represents 5cm (very close to 2.0") adjustment at 300m, or about 0.6MOA, but I don't have time to hunt down a reference right now to check that.

Re: Mosin hunting question
I took my deer last year with my M39 and Igman 150gr SPs. MFS 203gr SPs also shoot well but I haven't shot anything with them yet. I carry the rifle only two ways - 4 in the magazine with the bolt closed on an empty chamber (noisy and not particularly fast) and 5 loaded with one chambered and the sa...

Re: What's the dumbest thing you've ever done with a Mosin
.308 shouldn't even be able to fire in a mosin, and if it somehow did the escaping gas around the case into the action should be significant I'd think. Actually, the cases are surprisingly close in length and diameter at the outside of the shoulder, and 7.62x51 & .308 will often (usually?) head...

I asked about this in my thread over on Gunboards about Chinese ammo markings, and Captain Mainwaring replied in this post : "There was a bit of variation in Chinese script in the mid 50s- early 60s because many characters were being changed from more complex traditional forms to 'simplified' f...

Re: Dry firing a mosin
I found some .410 shotgun snap caps with the spring-loaded brass plungers to cushion the strikers, and they work perfectly in 7.62x54 chambers. I tried them in .303 British but the snap caps are too fat at the front.

Re: Yellow and Silver Tip Ammo
One slight correction - it is Hungarian steel-core heavy ball. Most heavy ball was (is?) lead core but at some point the Hungarians and someone else, the Czechs IIRC, switched to steel core. The Hungarians added the white stripe to the yellow on the tip, but I don't know about the other (Czechs?). R...

Re: FMJ vs Cast load data
Another factor, but of secondary magnitude, is bore friction. For bullets of equal weight and otherwise identical loads, jacketed bullets will generally shoot somewhat slower. Since it is challenging to get conventional cast bullets to perform well at normal velocities in high-power rifle cartridges...

Re: Long firing pin on M44
Interesting. So those markings are 1/100ths of a line, as in "3 line rifle". I find it kind of surprising that even after going metric, the USSR continued to use (for a few purposes at least ) a "traditional" unit that was defined by Czar Peter the Great (as 1/10 of an English in...

Re: Long firing pin on M44
I thought the firing pin protrusion measurements were metric: 0.75mm and 0.95mm, which would give 0.0295" and 0.0374" respectively. Am I mistaken?

Re: New Guy Question
For roll your own lead-free hunting ammo, I think our options are limited to Barnes TSX bullets: .310" 123gr and .311" 150gr. If anyone knows of other options, I'd like to know, although I don't need them yet.

Re: 7.62x54R stripper clips in detail
I can add two varieties that I have not noticed mentioned yet, but I do not have any decent photos - I will try to take some soon. Long ago I got a case of 1951-vintage Hungarian light ball (L, not LPS) on chargers, three to a standard Soviet box, in four tar-paper packs in the crate. The chargers a...

Ahoy the forum! I've been lurking for a while and finally got tired of not seeing the pictures. I've had an M39 (VKT 1944) for decades and finally got around to hunting with it this year: https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7581/15737275486_7220f471b7_c.jpg 2014 MD button buck Mule deer button buck - I h...
