Re: 3-4 MOA par for the course on 91/30?
I agree: I need readers, and I see double-images of the rear sight. The two overlapping circles I see from a peep sight or ghost ring works better than double-image rear open sights. That said, I prefer the cheek-weld I get on the 91/30 over the M1 or M1917!

Re: 3-4 MOA par for the course on 91/30?
What causes the muzzle rise with a hot barrel? I see a few things people are doing for general accuracy: - shim the action, using 5 to 20 thou brass shims - tighten the action screws to 30-40 inch lbs - float the barrel a bit (permanent change) - bed the barrel under the forearm band with oiled felt...

Re: What size reloads are you shooting in your M/N? .310, .3
So does anybody have a source for inexpensive cast lead that either has a gas-check or takes one, in these sizes (312, 313, 314)?

Re: 3-4 MOA par for the course on 91/30?
I got my 91/30 back to the range and ran a few groups of 5 shots, with a 5 minute break in-between (waiting for the firing line to "go safe"). Like last week, I seemed to have one high flyer in each group of 5; it's possible that the barrel is changing as it warm (or I just lose concentrat...

I'm loading Hornady Interlock 150 gr. .312", which is all I can get locally, but it's pricey.

Re: Brass
I buy the PPU, then reload, neck size only. They don't seem to wear or need trimming. I lose one in the grass now and then, and just buy more PPU to get more cases.

Re: Bore advice...
Interesting observation, millman. I'll have to try using a nylon brush for a while and see if patches look cleaner.

Re: Bore advice...
I use an Otis pull-through: 3 passes with Ed's Red bore cleaner, then 10 pulls with a copper brush, 3 pulls with a dry patch, then repeat. I've done as few as 1 cycle, and as many as ten cycles (mostly if I've been shooting cast lead with no gas-check :-/ ). There is always some discoloration on the...

Re: 3-4 MOA par for the course on 91/30?
BTW, I was testing a gallery load, probably about 1600 fps. I'll test at 29xx fps for 100+ yards, once I find some real powder for sale. Normally, I'd expect groups to tighten-up a bit, but I don't shoot better than 4 MoA, so not expecting any improvement. I took the handguard off and did the dollar...

Re: 3-4 MOA par for the course on 91/30?
Thanks for the perspective. I was shooting 50 yard , but 4 MoA is 4 MoA, no matter the distance. In this case, point of impact clmbed 2.5 inches over 10 shots.

3-4 MOA par for the course on 91/30?
I took a '42 Izhevsk to the range today, and shots 1-3 grouped within 2 MOA (shooting benchrest, no sandbags). I slowly shot another 7 shots, but the point-of-impact climbed 5 MOA upwards! For the 10-shot group, there was quite a vertical climb (5 MOA), but the whole 10-shot group was within 3 MOA h...

Re: What would be a good at the range barrel wash?
Good idea, JYD: the one oily patch won't remove the salt, but it will lock it away from the damp air for a while. Re: WD-40 being bad, it's true that it's not really a lubricant at all. But it is excellent at washing water off metal, and leaving a surface which is ready to take the oil of your choic...

Re: What would be a good at the range barrel wash?
I like to take a small 8 oz. pump spray bottle. The nozzle fits down the barrel nicely, and you can spray a few times, let it drain, spray x3, drain, spray x3 drain. Then pull a single dry patch down x3 with an Otis (OK, I use the shop box-o-rags), then a WD-40-soaked patch down x3 to avoid rust. Th...
