Re: M 16

Good luck waiting for that, by the time Uncle is done with they they are falling apart, plastic and aluminium are not the materials of forever. THe AR platform is nice but... as you say, it's a fairly fragile rifle in comparison to some of their old WWII counterparts and not quite as reliable. On m...

Re: M 16

Our local police department got some m16 rifles that had the select fire disabled making them semi auto. Think any if these rifles may ever be available like the WWII rifles were? Or are the days of surplus rifles over? JB I was actually thinking the same thing though any such move would probably d...

Re: 6.0 million Garands

I've been in the U.S. Army for a little over 30 years. Although I like the AR platform, am competent with it and carried an M4 in Iraq, I don't own one nor do I want one. For me, I just like the accuracy, range and power of the M1 Garand. Given the choice, many of my peers would rather carry an old ...

Surplus 7.62x54r is still available and cheap

I was checking out the Dunham's Sports catalog and was surprised to see that the corrosive surplus spam cans are still $100.00 for a 440 round spam can. I would have bet money that they'd be twice that by now. There must still be plenty of surplus stuff to go around.

French Perception of the Mosin Nagant

I'm in Italy right now working with some NATO officers. Just yesterday I was speaking with a French officer concerning firearms. Like me, he enjoys firearms but is very constrained as to what he can buy. He has one Mosin Nagant but it has been plugged, drilled and basically made inoperable. He isn't...

Re: 1926 hex on gunbroker

Hi guys. Yes, I was the one that bought this rifle. After a couple of sleepless nights pondering this post, I suppose that I am both amused and miffed about some of the comments made here about a personal decision that I and I alone made. Comments range from, "...gee my collection just went up...

Re: Mauser rifles, explained

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j7P79qHPkso Did it look like one of these? I'm not sure. It's been a while since I've handled it and didn't pay too much attention to the markings. What to do remember is the WWI date as well as the serial number that was in even thousands. I'm not sure if that's impo...

Re: Lost Squadron Of Pickled Spitfires Found

Small setback in this story, no Spitfires to be found: http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/aviation/9811196/Search-for-lost-Spitfires-ends-in-failure-for-treasure-hunters.html Sounded too good to be true. And if they did get buried I'm sure some locals knew of it. Wouldn't surprise me if they got dug u...

Re: Mauser rifles, explained

Can you get us some pics of that Mauser AJ? We could help ID it. Sure, but it may be a while. I'm currently overseas on a temporary duty assignment with the Army and he's in the States. Next time I'm at his house, I'll get some photos and I'll have you guys ID it. I do know that the serial numbers ...

Re: Just ordered an M1 Garand

It has been said that orders are running as late as three months, this is not just due to high volume orders because of the panic, but because they inspect each rifle before it goes out, properly inspect it. It's worth the wait. I'm in no rush. I really like the idea that whatever rifle I happen to...

Just ordered an M1 Garand

A few weeks ago I ordered a Service Grade M1 Garand from the CMP and am anxiously awaiting its arrival. I've always wanted a nice semi-auto centerfire, but could never decide between the dizzying array of options: AK variant, Ruger Mini 14, AR, M1A, etc... All the recent fuss about gun control and t...

Re: Mauser rifles, explained

My brother owns an old German Mauser. I think he said it's from WWI. He picked it up for a song years ago. It's really more of a work of art than a rifle. The fit and finish are near perfect. When I was stationed in Iraq, my Division constructed a big display of various captured weapons. My favorite...

Re: safety

My range is covered in snow and ice with snow covered piles of ruin all around......and still I do not chamber a round until I sit down, point the rifle at the target, stuff five rounds into the magazine and am ready to fire. I am equally careful, almost to a fault. As a combat veteran, it always t...

Re: Cleaning your rifle initially and after shooting!

What are you guys using for gun oil? For years I used Remington Rem Oil but recently switch to a cheaper option: Mobil 1 synthetic motor oil 5W 20. So far, it's working great and is a heck of a lot cheaper than the tiny gun oils. Any downsides to my choice of oil? Thanks.

Re: mosin nagant 91/30 cosmoline

I don't use any heat on my rifle stocks. I just wipe it down with rags and a bit of mineral oil. I then wipe it down with linseed oil, especially inside the stock where it seems to really soak up the oil.

Re: Cleaning your rifle initially and after shooting!

As I was getting ready to mix a batch of the "Ed's Red" bore cleaner, my wife had an excellent idea. Since the mixture consists of 4 equal parts, she gave me a 20-ounce glass jar with index marks on the side every 4 ounces. Her idea was to simply pour each of the four ingredients up to eac...

I currently own 5 Mosins. I showed them to my neighbors this evening. They think I'm crazy. Wonder what they'd think of your collection?! :)
