It looks like oil - Are you storing it butt down? JYD is right, oil will always pick up stuff and gravity does the rest.

I heard people use a dremel and grind off the 9x19 mark on the rim to keep from getting mixed up. I was thinking of doing this but I have plenty of 9x18 cases.

He can be pretty stubborn, I am glad he listened to me this time. The rifle spent a lot of time in Southern California then the last 10 years up in the northwest, but inside closets. I was pretty amazed myself on its condition. Swedish magic?

Thanks for the warm welcome! I don't know if I should take my Mosin and go home now after some of the replies.
