Re: Black Powder Cartridges for a Mosin Nagant? Advice PLEA

Yeah, you can still get the 46 grain Czech stuff. Here's a link: http://www.sgammo.com/product/surplus/1 ... ecoil-ammo

They also have it in bigger boxes at a lower cost/round.

Re: How to Secure Your Firearms until I can acquire a Gunsaf

Depends on if you're protecting from toddlers, teenagers, bungling thieves or thieves who know what they're doing. I used to simply have a variety of cases and a pile of little locks with the same combination. As the collection grew and this became unmanageable I bought a safe.

Re: Okie gauges

That's interesting - I don't think I've seen anybody throw out a # before. I've only had the pleasure of checking seven of them and they've all passed so far. It's well worth it though, just takes a few seconds after cleaning and before putting it into the safe, and it sounds like it's basically 50/...

Re: New Member, Patburns52

The other thing is that since there is variation in different versions of the surplus ammo some of them are going to shoot better or worse with any particular kind. Personally I just buy one kind of ammo, some of the rifles are more or less accurate either because of their inherent accuracy or their...

Re: Dragoons, ex-dragoons, 91-30s, what's the point?

Other than it just being interesting the way these rifles would get reconfigured as they refined their idea of what made a good general issue battle rifle, it also explains how you can have a 91/30 that is dated before 1930. Because otherwise that's really pretty weird, you know? Because otherwise i...

Re: OKIE Headspace Gages are # 1

desdem12's answer sounds about right to me although I'm no expert. You'll get some extra stretch that you have to be careful of. As to which one to get, if you just got one - the question to ask yourself is if it failed a no go what would you do? Bring it back into spec or buy a field gauge and see ...

Re: Mosin Nagant Wish List, what's on yours?

I don't have a ton of Mosins, but I have some nice ones from the 20s - 40s, and just judging from the pictures here it would be fun to get something pre-revolution. In particular those Sestroryetsk pictures are just too cool, although I'm not even sure where to start looking for one.

Re: In the process of ordering my new 91/30

Just to illustrate the point - I started with handguns (competed, etc) and went to rifles. I started with .22s but before receiving any formal training or even much in the way of advice shot a 1903 which is roughly the same period and the rounds are in the same ballpark, power-wise. And the sucker l...

Re: Elevation Adjustment

So in the final analysis, when shooting at 100 meters or closer, you generally have to compensate by aiming a bit low? I actually had the best groupings in my first outing when I did this at 50 yds. You'll have to try it and see for your particular rifle/ammo combo but if you're going a bit high it...

Re: Elevation Adjustment

So here's ballistics 101 - the sights are set up so that the barrel's actually pointing up a bit, and if it's set to, say, 200 yards it will exactly hit where the sights are pointing at on the way back down. That means there's also some point where it's dead on on the way up! So if you're shooting a...

Re: I Think I Got Bubba'ed Again..

If linseed oil, heavily applied, ever gets over the sticky stage, I think it does get hard. Usually people use "boiled" linseed oil which has some drying agents added. It's pretty much set in a day - similar to tung oil. Both are suitable for US military rifles - either could have been us...

Re: sight adjustment

Glad to hear your wife's recovering. I picked up one of your tools from buymilsurp since I wanted to get started and it was very quick and easy to adjust the windage. It definitely just takes a little motion to make a big difference in the target - if I were using a punch I'd probably still be cursi...

Re: Bulk ammo storage

In the wood isn't so bad - it lifts the can off of any concrete floor which is the thing that will really kill you. Then just open the spam cans as you need them, and I've got mine in a pair of 30 cal USGI cans which is really plenty to be lugging around.
