I found a (circled K) on the forward barrel shank bolt side and a (circled U ) ? also forward on the barrel shank but on the opposite side. Any help?

I have acquired what I believe is a 1891 Remington Mosin Nagant Dated 1918. It has a 4 digit serial number on action and butplate. Bolt and magazine Serial numbers do not match action.
